Papers on Vernacular Architecture by James Walton

These unlisted papers comprise notes, cuttings, drawings and photographs relating to roofs, especially slate and cruck-frame construction.

James Walton was born in Yorkshire in 1911. He studied at the Universities of London and Leeds, before emigrating to Lesotho, Africa, in 1947. He held the post of Deputy Director of Education there until 1960 and then moved to Cape Town in South Africa where he was Managing Director of Longman Southern Africa.
Walton gained recognition for his pioneering studies of vernacular architecture. He was a founder member of the Vernacular Architecture Group in Britain and a founder and Honorary Life President of the Vernacular Society of South Africa. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He was published widely in Africa and around the world.
James Walton died in Cape Town in 1999.
