Administrative / Biographical History

FORTRAN (FORmula TRANslating System) was devised in about 1954 by a team led by John W. Backus at the IBM Watson Scientific Laboratory at Columbia University. It was the first of the major high level programming languages. It was released commercially in 1957. FORTRAN has been continually updated and remains the language of choice for scientific and industrial programming at the beginning of the 21st century.
