Scope and Content

Includes manuscript notes about buildings in Leeds, news clippings, images, correspondence, maps, ephemera about businesses in Leeds and photographs of buildings.

Box 1 - includes folders containing press cuttings with
articles about Murray Mitchell and reviews of ‘The Building Stone Heritage of Leeds’, trade brochures, booklets on urban planning and renewal, research material for book, including manuscript notes and photocopied material from publications. Dated: 1989-2006

Box 2 includes folders containing manuscript and typescript drafts and proofs and research material such as
maps and plans, manuscript notes, photocopied material,
press cuttings. Dated: 1992-2004

Box 3 includes folders containing correspondence between Murray Mitchell and architects and stone merchants
Dated: 1990-1997

Box 4 includes folders containing correspondence between Mitchell and Frank Dimes/other individuals illustrations for second edition of ‘The Building Stone Heritage of Leeds’ (both draft and final) and accompanying notes. Dated: 1989-2006

Box 5 includes field notebooks, folders containing research material for ‘The Building Stone Heritage of Leeds’ such as maps, manuscript notes, correspondence with Prof Howard Versey and others, published booklets and brochures. Dated: 1989-1997

Box 6 includes photographs, slides of photographs and draft illustrations; originals and proofs for inclusion in first and second edition of ‘The Building Stone Heritage of Leeds’. Dated: 1989-2005. Box 6 contains the contents of two original boxes. The first box was labelled: 'Originals and proofs/illustrations; Coloured cover front and back; Coloured plates A and B 1-8; black and white figures 1-19 1st; 2nd edition; Maps 1-7; Tables 1-2; Sketches (Artwork & preparation); the second was labelled: 'Progress with illustrations'

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Murray Mitchell worked for the British Geological Survey, specialising in the study of fossils found in Carboniferous limestone. Following his retirement he formed an honorary association with the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Leeds.
