Dowthwaite, Bunny and Bacon deeds

Deeds and papers relating to the families of Dowthwaite, Bunny and Bacon and their estates at Westholme and Newsham, in the parish of Winston, Co. Durham and Horton Grange, Northumberland. The families of Browne, Tonge, Dawson and Blackett also figure together with land at Tedcastle and Deans, and tithes at Horton Grange, Northumberland, land at Whorleton, Middridge and Seaton Carew in Co. Durham, and Chancery proceedings for foreclosure at Winston. There are some early nineteenth century plans and statistics relating to some farms on the estate.

The Bunny family held the manor of Newsham, near Winston in the south of Co. Durham between 1591 and 1692, when it was conveyed to the Dowthwaite family, and combined with the nearby estate at Westholme, which that family held until the end of the male line in 1714. By 1717 this property had been acquired by foreclosure by John Bacon. This estate, with existing lands and Horton Grange, near Ponteland in Northumberland, purchased in 1715, descended in the Bacon family for over a century.
