Scope and Content

Letter under the signet of James III, king of Scotland.

Directed to Master David Kay, rector of Idvy [Forfarshire], Official Principal of St Andrews, ordering him to desist from all legal process in the courts spiritual against John Napier (Johne Napar) of Merchiston (Merchanstoune) in an action relating to Lady Craigmillar (Cragmillar) over some silver heirlooms. Edinburgh, 15 June 1474.

Administrative / Biographical History

James III (1452-1488), king of Scotland.

John Napier (d.1487) was son of Sir Alexander Napier of Merchiston, knight and provost of Edinburgh in 1452 and 1457, and Elizabeth, daughter of Lauder of Hatton. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Murdoch Menteith of Rusky. They had a son, Archibald Napier of Edinbellie and Merchiston.

Master David Kay was rector of Idvy, Forfarshire, and official principal of St Andrews.
