Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Presbyterian cause began in the Llandudno area in 1784 through the medium of Welsh at various locations. The first Seilo chapel was erected in 1813; this was modified in 1855 and rebuilt in 1861. English language services were first held in the new chapel during the summer of 1861 with Welsh services being held in the original chapel. The arrival of the railway in 1858 and the growth of Llandudno had brought in increasing numbers of English visitors during the summer months, together with families from England settling in the area. In 1879 the North Wales Association of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Connexion had approached Welsh chapels in Llandudno, Bangor and Caernarfon to set up an English cause in their respective towns; this had already been established in Rhyl. A local committee was formed by prominent members of Seilo and in 1880 freehold land was bought on which an iron chapel was erected. In 1886 a schoolroom was built and in 1889 it was decided that a new Church would be built. Work commenced in February 1890 and it was completed and opened for the Easter services in 1891. The church is now (2011) called Gloddaeth United Church and was formed from the merger of the Llandudno branch of the Presbyterian Church of Wales with the local United Reformed Church, Christ Church.
