Personal Papers of Cardinal John Henry Newman on microfilm

This material is held atLiverpool Hope University Archives and Special Collections

Scope and Content

The contents of the microfilm reels reproduce a major portion of the Newman manuscripts preserved at the Oratory of St. Philip Neri, in Birmingham, England. The Oratory collection is divided into two parts: the Miscellaneous Papers, which are preserved in the room in which Newman lived; and the Letters, which are preserved in the Archivium. These two collections have been listed separately, and a means of referring to the original documents has been provided by giving the cupboard number (e.g. A 1.1) of the Papers and the title of the volume (e.g. "Personal Collection Acton") of the Letters. It should be said, by way of warning, that there are actually a good many letters in the collection known as Miscellaneous Papers.

Administrative / Biographical History

Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890), was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2010 and will surely be canonised before too long. Newman stands as a Victorian giant in the field of theology, philosophy and education. Influencing many academic and spiritual disciplines, Newman's writings and his lifelong search for religious truth continue to inspire scholars throughout the world. Liverpool Hope University aims to enhance and extend the reach of John Henry Newman's life and spirituality with the development of the John Henry Newman Studies Project , an international forum for research and academic study of the meaning of Newman's thought and work.
