Photograph album and correspondence of the Pelham-Clinton family, descendents of the 3rd and 4th Dukes of Newcastle, 1791-c.1881

The collection consists of a photograph album of the mid-19th century, containing 74 images, generally portraits of members of the family (NPC 1). A group of letters and related items primarily concerns the children of the 4th Duke of Newcastle (NPC 2), and includes a pass to attend the funeral of the Duke of Wellington.

Henry Pelham-Clinton, 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne, and his wife Georgiana Elizabeth, née Mundy, Duchess of Newcastle, had eleven surviving children: Lady Anna Maria (1810-1822), Henry, Earl of Lincoln [later 5th Duke of Newcastle] (1811-1864), Lady Georgiana (1812-1874) and her twin Lady Charlotte (1812-1886), Lord Charles (1813-1894) and his twin Lord Thomas (1813-1882), Lord William (1815-1850), Lord Edward (1816-1842), Lady Caroline (1818-1898), wife of Sir Cornwallis Ricketts, Lady Henrietta (1819-1890), wife of Admiral Sir Edwin Clayton D'Eyncourt, and Lord Robert Renebald (1820-1867). The Duchess died in childbirth in 1822 giving birth to a stillborn girl and another son, George, who only lived 13 days. The children were in their early years a close-knit and affectionate group. They were based at Clumber, where the girls remained in the charge of a governess after their brothers went to school. The unmarried sisters Lady Georgiana and Lady Charlotte Pelham-Clinton lived from the 1850s onwards at Ranby Hall near Retford in Nottinghamshire, and kept in close contact with their siblings, nephews and nieces.

The album is bound in tooled leather with metal clasps and is in reasonable condition, although its spine is missing.

Nothing is known of the history of this collection, or how it became detached from other parts of the family archive. It was acquired by the University of Nottingham in December 2006. The contents of the collection suggest that they were once the property of the Ladies Georgiana and Charlotte Pelham-Clinton, twin daughters of the 4th Duke of Newcastle.
