Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
This private bank was formed at Tewkesbury in 1809 by a family of tanners, and was also known as the Gloucestershire Bank. It stopped payment during the 1825 financial crisis but later resumed business as Hartland, Prior, Proctor & Easthorpe. In 1831 it merged into the newly formed Gloucestershire Banking Co. and its three offices at Tewkesbury, Evesham (1813) and Cheltenham (1825) formed that bank's first branches. Nathaniel Hartland joined the Gloucestershire bank and became senior manager.
