This collection of material was principally created by Professor Kaye Wellings, Head of the Department of Social and Environmental Health Research (SEHR). The archives holds material gathered by her and colleagues within the department for evaluative research projects on AIDS public education campaigns conducted in Europe between 1983-1996, initially through the European Commission 'Concerted Action' project, 'Assessing HIV/AIDS Preventive Strategies, in partnership with the University Institute for Social and Preventive Medicine (IUMSP). This was expanded as part of the 'Europe Against AIDS' programme to form the 'HIV/AIDS Public Education Information Exchange'.
The collection consists of three series with the first composed of photocopied press cuttings of HIV/AIDS news coverage in the UK between 1983-1993. These cuttings were originally created by the Health Education Authority and provides a record of mainstream newspapers and periodicals along with medical professional publications. The other two series directly relate to the EC Concerted Actions project with a collection of photographic prints, postcards and other campaign material collected from HIV/AIDS public health campaigns from various European countries from 1986-1998. The final series contains 35mm mounted photographic slides organised into categories relating to HIV/AIDS and sexual health. Examples include: poster designs from European AIDS public health campaigns, along with some examples of UK AIDS press coverage; presentation slides for the 'Concerted Action' project and graphs and statistics produced for the National Survey for Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyle (NATSAL).
