The Taff Vale Railway was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1836, the aim being to build a railway line from Merthyr to Cardiff. The line from Cardiff to Abercynon opened in 1840 and the rest of the line to Merthyr opened in 1841. A branch line up the Rhondda was opened in the same year and further branch lines and extensions to existing lines followed.

The Bute Dock Company became the Cardiff Railway Company in 1897. The railway opened in 1909.
