S.O.G.A.T (Aberdeen Branch, Division 1) Minutes [of the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants, Division 1], 1924 - 1949

The Society of Graphical and Allied Trades (SOGAT) was formed in 1786, by an amalgamation of 3 bookbinding lodges in London, and since then has extended to cover workers in general printing, newspapers, bookbinding and allied trades. It has merged with a number of other organisations, most recently, the Scottish Graphical Association.

An Aberdeen branch of the society was established by 1924, at which time it was known as the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants, Division 1. The Donside branch was formed by 1936.

Further information about the development of the trade union movement and the history of individual trade unions in Aberdeen can be found in William Diack, History of the Trades Council and the Trade Union Movement in Aberdeen (Aberdeen: Aberdeen Trades Council, 1939), and in Kenneth D. Buckley, Trade Unionism in Aberdeen 1870 - 1900 (Edinburgh and London: Oliver and Boyd, 1955). Arthur Marsh and Victoria Ryan, Historical Directory of Trade Unions, 4 vols (Aldershot: Gower, 1980 - 1984) also contains useful information about the development of individual unions, at both the national and local level.
