Scope and Content

Papers of the Wynne family comprising deeds and other documents relating to Caerhun, Conway, Gyffin, Henryd, Llanbedrycennin and Llanfairfechan, Caernarfonshire, and Llechylched, Anglesey, 1740-1890, and correspondence relating to the tenancy of Tyn y Coed, Llechylched, Anglesey, 1856; papers of the Sampson family relating mainly to their property interests and estate settlements, 1794-1906, including correspondence, mainly with solicitors, 1794-1906, deeds, marriage settlements, copies of wills and other documents mainly relating to property in Wandsworth, Surrey, 1803-[c. 1900], financial papers, mainly solicitors' accounts, 1819-1900, legal papers, 1808-[c. 1843], papers relating to the Wandsworth estate, 1820-1905, and miscellaneous maps, plans and surveys, [1807]-[pre 1869].

Administrative / Biographical History

The Wynne family originated in Plas Newydd and Garthmeilio, Denbighshire. Robert Wynne married Mary Roberts, the heiress of Brynyneuadd, Llanfairfechan, Caernarfonshire, in 1751. Their grandson was John Wynne, whose second wife was Ann Fry of Strood, Kent. Samuel Parr Lynes was the grandson of John Wynne and his first wife. The Sampson family was of English origin, members living in Yorkshire and Bath. Charles John Sampson moved to Aberdunant, near Tremadog, Caernarfonshire, and married Emily Jane Wynne of Garthewin, Denbighshire. Their descendants maintained various homes in Caernarfonshire but had property elsewhere, particularly in Wandsworth, Surrey.
