Scope and Content

Writers' Petitions (1749-1805) and Committee of College References and Papers (1806-56) contain candidates' autograph petitions, with certificates of age, testimonials and occasional work specimens. The Committee papers contain in addition printed 'forms of interrogation' completed by the candidate and the nominating Director. There is a 'stray' volume of Home Establishment Petitions (1804-34) with petitions for clerkships at East India House. The series also includes Nomination Certificates (1823-37), a Register of Students' Admissions (1812-56), Students' Examination Results (1806-57), and Students' Leaving Certificates (1815-57).

Before 1749, there are occasional applications and letters of recommendation in IOR/E/1 Miscellaneous Letters Received, and the names of appointees appear in IOR/B Court Minutes. IOR/Z/J/1-2 contain an index of applicants compiled at the end of the nineteenth century.
