Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Thomas Bernard & Co was established as maltsters in 1874 . This was the same year that, after the death of their father, John Mackay Bernard and Daniel Bernard took over the brewery of Thomas and James Bernard & Co . Thomas Bernard & Co began at Haddington, Scotland , extending their premises to Seafield, Leith, Scotland . In 1895 the company became a limited liability company under the name of Thomas Bernard & Co Ltd .
The directors were John Mackay Bernard , James Pringle , G H Stevenson , Andrew Smith and Alexander Mouat . John Mackay Bernard and James Pringle were also the directors at Thomas and James Bernard & Co (registered in March 1895 ), Daniel having resigned in 1889 to set up his own company in Gorgie, Edinburgh, Scotland . In 1947 the company amalgamated with Hugh Baird & Sons Ltd , brewers and maltsters of Glasgow, Scotland . The company was dissolved on 15 October 1991 .

Custodial History
The collection was previously stored with the rest of the Scottish Brewing Archive at Heriot–Watt University. It moved to the University of Glasgow in 1991. Custody of the Scottish Brewing Archive was transferred to Glasgow University Archive Services in 2008.
