Walter Jarvis, a British middle and long distance runner began his sporting career in 1910 when he started racing for the Silvertown Rubber Works Athletic Club in London (where he worked as a clerk). From 1914 he ran for Woolwich Polytechnic Athletic Club. He won many prizes at all distances from 100 yards to 12 miles and was Essex mile champion in 1920. He came second in the South of Thames cross country championship at Epsom and was Woolwich Polytechnic Athletic Club half-mile champion,both in 1921. He took his own life in the 1930s.
