They acted as chartered accountants and factors, for example, for the property owned by the family of Andrew Ostler, wine and spirit merchant in Greenock, and for the Ostler Trustees. From about the same date William Hardie also had dealings with the SS Rebecca Co Ltd and with the owners of and/or investors in the business of at least two other ships, the Helena and the Lady Gertrude (registered in London in 1885/6 and owned by Craig Scott & Co ). In 1893 , William Hardie was auditor for the Burgh of Rothesay, Island of Bute, Scotland. By 1898 , expanding its interests in domestic and overseas investments, the firm was carrying on its business under the name of Hardie & Rowan (possibly, R Houston Rowan), chartered accountants and stockbrokers. Hardie & Rowan feature as secretaries ( 1908 ) and later honorary secretaries ( 1911 ) of the Greenock Chamber of Commerce & Manufactures , serving during the presidency of John George Kincaid, engineer and shipmaster of Greenock.
