The diary describes a visit by Doris Birkin to Poznan, Poland. It records the journey from Lincoln to Poznan by train and ferry and the things that she spent her time doing in Poznan while her companion, 'Cyril', was engaged at an exhibition. It is not possible to establish which exhibition is in question. Poznan has historically been a centre for Polish and International trade fairs and the diary gives no clear chronological clue. The ease of travel described in the diary and the type of notebook in which the diary is written would suggest that Doris made the journey in the 1930s. The diary runs from 14 April to 29 May of the unknown year.

Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
No details are recorded about the background or life of Doris Birkin. Her companion on this journey to Poznan, Poland is described as 'Cyril', perhaps her husband. Cyril was working at a Poznan trade exhibition in Poland in some capacity. He was probably a salesman since he had 'catalogues' confiscated at the Polish border. At one point he supervises the packing of the 'engine' at the end of the show suggesting that this was the item he was displaying.
