Scope and Content

Much of the content of this series relates to IIED's early days and to the UN Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, 1972. The file of correspondence (SZ/IIED/1) includes copies of agenda and minutes of some Board and Council meetings and related papers. The documents in File SZ/IIED/2 include: annual reports, reports and papers of conferences, symposia and other events organised by IIED; a copy of the draft text of Only One Earth; and documents relating to various other UN conferences on environmental issues.

Administrative / Biographical History

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) was founded in 1971, under the sponsorship of the Aspen [Colorado] Institute for Humanistic Studies, as the International Institute for Environmental Affairs (IIEA). The impetus for its foundation was the impending UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972. Solly Zuckerman was a founder member of IIED's Board and Council. IIED published the theme book of the Stockholm Conference, Only One Earth by Barbara Ward and Reneacute; Dubos.
