Scope and Content

Pope, writing shortly before his death, refers to his failing health, saying that his own doctor(s?) disagree with the recipient's Yorkshire doctor Thompson. He adds that he has had and read "the Bishop's book".

A general outline of the life and works of the poet Alexander Pope can be found in the Dictionary of National Biography; there are also numerous biographical and critical evaluations. Hugh Bethell inherited the manor and estate of Rise, in East Yorkshire, from his uncle, Sir Hugh Bethell. He was prominent in the early development of Arabian bloodstock in the breeding of English racehorses, through his ownership of the stallion known as Bethell's Arabian.
