Frank Craven was born in June 1891 and attended Sheffield Central Secondary School between 1901 and 1907. He then joined the pupil-teacher scheme and attended Sheffield Pupil Teacher Centre from 1907 to 1909, qualifying as an Uncertified Teacher at the end of this period. In October 1909, he began studying for a Bachelor of Science degree, in physics, mathematics and general science at Sheffield University. In July 1912 he was awarded a BSc degree and qualified as a Certified Teacher. He taught at Kirkby Upper Standard School in Nottinghamshire between 1912 and 1914, when he left to join the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served in the army until 1919, by which time, he had attained the rank of corporal. He left Kirkby Middle School in 1920 and taught at Brinsworth Council School, Hebden Bridge where he worked for two years before applying for the headship of Barnby Dun Council School. He was headmaster of this school from 1927 to 1952 when he retired.
