Scope and Content

The manuscript legal book, soft bound in vellum, contains transcripts of legal documents, presumably used for legal training and reference. The documents include examples of a marriage settlement, feoffment, fine, lease, bond, mortgage, bargain and sale and various other types of deed. The volume has an index of document types at the back and a list of declarations. Six loose papers comprising a copy letter and more transcripts of legal documents were found inside the volume and have been removed and placed inside an acompanying file. The volume is undated but the copy letter (MS 83/7), sent by Jonathon Orme from Medbourne, Leicestershire, is dated September 1779. The letter seems slightly later than the rest of the volume which was probably compiled in the middle of the 18th century.

Administrative / Biographical History

The compiler of this volume of legal notes is not known. The volume was compiled in the middle of the 18th century by a lawyer, a legal clerk, or more likely, a law student. A loose copy of a letter in the volume is from Jonathon Orme of Medbourne, and the volume itself was acquired from someone living in the same part of Leicestershire. Nothing is known of Jonathon Orme.
