Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Bedwellty parliamentary constituency was formed in 1918 from part of the former constituency of Monmouthshire. In 1983, following the Third Periodical Report of the Boundary Commission in Wales, Bedwellty became the basis for the new Islwyn constituency. The Labour Party was represented locally by the Bedwellty Division/Constituency Labour Party and later Islwyn CLP, as well as various wards. From 1918 to the present (2004) the constituency has had unbroken Labour Party representation in Parliament, namely Sir Charles Edwards, 1918-1950, Harold Finch, 1950-1970, Neil Kinnock, 1970-1995, and Don Touhig from 1995.
