Administrative / Biographical History

Cupar Local Committee, also known as Cupar Area Committee and Cupar District Area Committee, was established at a meeting of Cupar District Council on 15 April 1930. The area committees scheme was proposed by the Provisional County Council of Fife under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 (c. 13). Its purpose was to enable the county to be divided into smaller areas for the purpose of administration of the poor law and other functions that might be delegated by the County Council. The Area Committees were to be regarded as Joint Committees of the County Council and the District Councils. The Cupar Area committee had delegated responsibility for matters such as burial grounds and the poor law. At various times it had sub-committees responsible for items such as boots and clothing, public health, roads and plans. District councils were abolished in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 (c.65).
