Scope and Content

Volume, accompanied by a file of loose sheets, of recipes and advice for various domestic issues compiled by different authors. The volume contains several blank pages and text written upside down in a poetic style towards the end of the volume. The recipes include instructions for cultivating and preserving food, recipes for broths or alcohols, and also tips on how to make certain foods and medicines. Additionally, some entries in the volume discuss how to deal with certain ailments and issues in humans and also in animals like cattle or horses.

Some of the entries in the volume are obituaries or tributes to Joseph Stephens, an Archdeacon in Brecon, Wales. These are inserted into the middle of the volume.

Administrative / Biographical History

It appears that the volume and loose papers were kept by an individual living within the South-West region of England or within Wales, given the locations mentioned and the subject matter. It is possible that one of the authors or custodians of the material had contact with Joseph Stephens, who was Archdeacon of Breacon from 1708 to 1786
