This is a collection of the papers of Sir Francis James Rennell Rodd, K.C.B., 2nd Baron Rennell of Rodd (1895-1978), concerning British military administration of occupied territories in Africa, 1941-1946.

Administrative / Biographical History

Francis James Rennell Rodd, second Baron Rennell, was born on 25 October 1895 and died 15 March 1978. Educated at Eton College he enrolled at Balliol College, Oxford before dropping out after a year to join the war efforts. After service in many countries, including a stint in the diplomatic service in 1919, Rennell Rodd moved into banking, specifically a partner at bank Morgan, Grenfell & Co. where he stayed until his retirement. He also was part of the Ministry of Economic Warfare as a foreign expert during WW2 between 1942 and 1944. (Source: Oxford DNB)

Custodial History

The collection was donated to Nuffield College Library in the 1950s during his time as a visiting Fellow (1947-1959). There are further papers in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
