Salting used this notebook as a working inventory of the paintings in his collection, which he grouped under the following entries:
1. Pictures at ye National Gallery (October 1900)
2. Pictures in my rooms (October 1900)
3. German and Flemish Pictures, lent to Nat: Gall:
4. Dutch
5. English & French Pictures
6. English Pictures
7. English Watercolours and Drawings (framed)
8. French Pictures (Barbizon School, etc.)
9. English Pictures, continued
Entries include some or all of the following details: name of artist/attribution; brief description; year of acquisition; cost price; provenance; loaned to the National Gallery; medium; measurement; support; and approximate value. When a painting was resold, the entry was crossed out. A later hand has recorded National Gallery painting inventory numbers alongside the relevant entries. There is a pencil sketch on the verso of the free endpaper.
