Scope and Content

The files in this collection primarily concern correspondence about the arrangement of Defence Studies Dining Club meetings at the University concerning the arrangement of meetings. The correspondence includes invitations to speak, membership matters, catering arrangements etc.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Defence Studies Dining Club was started in about 1965 by G.J. Eltringham, The University of Nottingham's Deputy Registrar. The intention was to bring together academics and serving members of the armed forces to discuss topics of common interest. Generally between 40 and 100 members of the club met once a month for an evening meal followed by a defence-related talk and discussion. After-dinner talks were given by eminent representatives of the armed forces. The venue for these events was the University's Portland building. The club was still in existence in 1997.
