Administrative / Biographical History
William Davies was an electrical engineer and local politician. He was born in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, in 1906, the son of George Davies, a miner's agent and councillor. He attended Ebbw Vale and Tredegar Intermediate schools and worked at Oakdale Colliery for ten years, qualifying as a mining electrical and mechanical engineer. At this time he won prizes for essays on lighting in mines. He was appointed electrical engineer to Tredegar Urban District Council (UDC) in 1934 and was active in the local war effort during the Second World War. In the 1950s he served on Bedwellty UDC. He pursued research interests including energy conservation and the theory and practice of management. He retired from Tredegar UDC in 1971.
