Administrative / Biographical History

The minutes of the first meeting recorded in the earliest minute book in this deposit (MSS.411/RLSA/1/1/1), held on 27 January 1892, are those of the Royal London Friendly Society Outside Staff Association. They refer to the last meeting held on 5 January 1892, which may have been the inaugural meeting, as reference is made at the council meeting of 31 March 1892 to expenses arising from the formation of the association. At the general quarterly meeting of 19 July 1893 it was resolved that amalgamation with the Royal London Clerks' Association should take place. The word 'outside' was then dropped from the name of the society. The organisation's name was later amended to the Royal London Staff Association. The Association became the National Union of Insurance Workers Royal London Section in 1964, although in the minutes of a meeting in January 1965 it was still styled the Royal London Staff Association. The first meeting under the new name was held in April 1965 (see MSS.411/RLSA/1/1/17).
