Administrative / Biographical History

Robert Alfred Lambourne, 1917-1972, M.B., Ch.B., Birmingham 1941, B.D. Birmingham 1961, general practitioner, theologian, psychiatrist and University teacher. Lambourne served in the Royal Army Medical Corps and then worked for many years as a general practitioner in Birmingham. He studied for a Diploma in Theology at the University of Birmingham 1956-57 and subsequently undertook a theology degree which was conferred in December 1961. He was appointed as Lecturer in Pastoral Studies in the Department of Theology at the University of Birmingham in 1963 where he developed a new Pastoral Studies Course to train leaders (clergy and others) in pastoral care.

His writings, both published and unpublished, relate particularly to the relationship between religion and medicine. A complete list of all his writings, including papers, sermons, lectures, notes etc, is given in Explorations in health and salvation: a selection of papers by Bob Lambourne , edited by Michael Wilson (University of Birmingham. Institute for the Study of Worship and Religious Architecture 1983, reissued in 1995). His book Community, Church and Healing: A Study of Some of the Corporate Aspects of the Church's Ministry to the Sick (published in 1963) was translated into French under the title Le Christ et la sante Theta: la mission de l'eglise pour la gu Thetarison et le salut des hommes (with a preface by Andr Theta Dumas and published in 1972).
