Papers of Cheape family of Strathtyrum and Lathockar

These boxes contain family and estate papers of that branch of the Cheape family which lived at Strathtyrum House, on the outskirts of St Andrews and can be summarised as follows:

• Correspondence, 1801-1824 arranged chronologically, 1840-1890s arranged by decade, plus unsorted (one of which contains genealogies), 11 boxes.
• Account books, 19th - 20th centuries, 5 boxes.
• Vouchers, 1790s-20th century, 11 boxes.
• Diaries and commonplace books, 3 boxes.
• Miscellaneous, 3 boxes, including minor building plans, printed matter, items related to golf links and adverts.

A cadet branch of the Cheapes of Rossie, the Cheapes of Wellfield were established in 1767 when James Cheape (1710-1803), second son to James Cheape, 3rd laird of Rossie, purchased the lands of Wellfield. In 1803 James was succeeded by his eldest son, James (1746-1824). The purchase of the lands of Strathtyrum, St. Andrews, in 1782, marks the beginning of the Cheapes of Strathtyrum.

Only one of the boxes of legal papers, 1788-1902, has been fully listed. The rest have merely been roughly sorted and a brief handlist to box contents produced.
