Administrative / Biographical History

Monkwearmouth, Sunderland and Bishopwearmouth Institution for Savings was established on 10th July 1824 in a schoolroom on Monkwearmouthshore.

By 1860 it had moved to a new site at the north end of Wearmouth Bridge, and the address was recorded in 1934 as being at North Bridge Street.

In 1912 the bank changed its name to become Sunderland TSB. On 24th July 1940 the head office moved to new premises on Athenaeum Street and these premises were extended in 1954.

In 1964 the Head Office premises were opened after having been rebuilt on the same site. Four years later the first TSB automatic teller machine to be opened in the north was installed at the branch.

In May 1975 Sunderland TSB became part of TSB of North East, following an amalgamation with the Northumberland & Durham TSB.
