Arthur Schnitzler papers

The collection contains sketches, first drafts and variants of the most important of Schnitzler's literary manuscripts and part of his correspondence (mainly that which Schnitzler personally filed in folders). Correspondents include Hermann Bahr, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Otto Brahm, Georg Brandes, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Max Reinhardt, Felix Salten, Gustav Schwarzkopf and Jakob Wassermann.

Unless restrictions apply, the collection is open for consultation by researchers using the Manuscripts Reading Room at Cambridge University Library. In 1938, the writer's widow, Olga Schnitzler, approached an English student, Erik Blackwell, who was resident in Austria, about the donation of Arthur Schnitzler's papers to an appropriate institution. Mr Blackwell contacted the Cambridge University Librarian, asking as a matter of urgency whether Cambridge Library would accept the writer's entire legacy as a donation from Olga Schnitzler.

A further major collection of papers comprising correspondence, diaries and other personal documents is held at the German literary archives in Marbach. There is an online catalogue at http://www.dla-marbach.de. There are also smaller collections at the Austrian National Library in Vienna, the Fondation Bodmer in Geneva, and the Jewish Library in Jerusalem.
