J. E. (John Ernest) Greaves (1847-1945) was Lord-Lieutenant of Caernarfonshire, 1886-1933. Born at Tan-yr-allt, Tremadog, Caernarfonshire, he was the eldest son of John Whitehead Greaves (1807-1880), the founder of J. W. Greaves and Son, Porthmadog, Caernarfonshire, owner of slate mines and quarries in Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. J. E. Greaves succeeded to the business and also owned a large estate at Glangwna, near Caernarfon, property at Bron Eifion, Criccieth, Caernarfonshire, and had considerable investments in Canada. He became Lord-Lieutenant of Caernarfonshire in 1886. In this capacity, he chaired the Advisory Committee responsible for nominating Justices of the Peace. He held various other positions in the county, being Chairman of the Quarter Sessions from 1890. He promoted higher nursing standards, and was involved with Caernarfon Cottage Hospital and the Council of Queen Victoria's Jubilee Institute for Nursing, and was chairman of the North Wales Nursing Association, 1908-1927. He was married to Marianne Steadman, 1875-1934. Their only daughter, Dorothy, married Colonel Godfrey Drage.
