Michael R. Hughes was born in Ty Hwnt i'r Mynydd, Clynnog, Caernarfonshire. He was educated at Ynys yr Arch school, Bwlch Derwin, and was a member of Brynengan chapel. He was apprenticed as a carpenter in Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire. By 1925, he had emigrated to Seattle, Washington. He won first prize at the Liverpool National Eisteddfod in 1929 for his story on the subject of 'Life in the United States or Canada'. While in Seattle he corresponded with his second cousin, William R. Williams of Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire.
