Records of Henry S. King & Company relating to the operation of the firm and its take over by Cox & Co., including:

  • Operation (1869-1923): signature books;
  • Amalgamation (1922-1924): report prepared for Lloyds Bank; balance sheets; Indian branch assets and liabilities;
  • General (1870-1923): sketch of Cornhill premises; papers relating to amalgamation with Cox & Co.

Administrative / Biographical History

Henry S. King was established as Smith, Elder & Co. in 1816. It was based at 65 Cornhill in the City of London. In 1868, it was renamed Henry S. King & Co. following partnership changes. From the outset the firm had strong connections with India, acting as London agent to many Indian-based merchants. It was taken over by army agents Cox & Co. in October 1922.
