Manorial documents relating to the property, rents and tenants of several estate owners in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, 1340-1946

The collection comprises:

• An Extent of the Manor of Langar and Barnstone in Nottinghamshire. This document is a parchment roll giving details of tenants, the extent of their holdings and services, and the value from rents of the lands they held. The document is divided into details of the various types of manorial tenant and land tenure. Latin. Undated, c. 1340 (MS 66/1);
• An account of lands belonging to William de Blyton de Leadenham and John Burden [Rotulus Occidental]. Latin. c. 1360 (MS 66/2);
• Rental of Robert de Caunton [Rentale Roberti de Calnetora]. This document is a parchment roll providing an account of the tenants, their lands and the rents they paid to Robert de Caunton. Latin. 1340 (MS 66/3);
• An account of property of Robert de Caunton in the parish of Caunton, Nottinghamshire [Redditus pertineo de Robertum de Calveton 'in parochia de Calveton']. Latin. undated, c.1340 (MS 66/4);

Langar and Barnstone in Nottinghamshire became in post conquest times a joint manor and formed part of the Honour of Peverel. Before the Norman Conquest, Godric was the chief landowner in Langar while in Barnstone, Godric and Azoe each had an estate and a hall. In 1086, the chief landowners in Langar and Barnstone were William Peverel and Walter de Aincurt. In 1162, Henry II gave lands in Clifton and Langar to Gerbod de Escalt who in turn passed them to Gerard de Rodes. These estates remained with the de Rodes family until they were granted to Robert and Eva Tibetot and their son, Pain, in 1285 by John de Rodes. Pain's great-granddaughter, Margaret Tibetot married Roger le Scrope whose father Richard received custody of the Tibetot lands from King Edward III in 1372. From the Scropes, Langar and other estates passed by marriage in 1672 to the Howes.

The lands in Nottinghamshire which are the subject of the rental (MS 66/3) in this collection form part of the estate of Robert de Caunton in the middle of the 14th century. Previously they had been held by Thomas de Muskham who in 1302 had in North Muskham and Caunton one fourth of a knight's fee. By 1346, these estates had passed into the possession of Robert de Caunton, the Prior of Newstead, and other tenants, who held between them one knight's fee. From Robert de Caunton, these lands went to the Prior of Newstead who was in possession of them in 1428.

No arrangement of the collection has been undertaken.
