Scope and Content

H. M. Coroner of Monmouthshire, Coroners' inquest files, 1866-1883.

Administrative / Biographical History

Coroners were originally royal officers who, from the 12th century onwards, held inquests into matters affecting Crown rights, including treasure trove and wrecks. The Coroner also investigated the circumstances of unnatural, sudden, or suspicious deaths, and deaths in prison. Until 1926 all such inquests were held before a jury.
