Alfred W. Evans (b. 1895), a Roman Catholic conscientious objector, initially applied to serve with the RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps), but was placed with a non-combatant Corps attached to the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, before being forcibly sent to France, court-martialled, and sentenced to death, commuted to ten years penal servitude.
