Scope and Content

This collection contains records produced by and relating to the Dumbarton branch of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds. Consisting of one file containing Rules of the Heart and Hand Lodge, No. 1704 Dumbarton District and one photocopy of the Official Programme of the 79th Annual General Meeting (1905).

Administrative / Biographical History

The Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds was formed in 1826 as a sickness and benefits society named Ashton Unity. It later changed its name to the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds. In subsequent years various friendly societies and mutual associations merged with the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds and it now operates as a mutual insurer named the Shepherds Friendly Society providing savings and insurance plans to over 60,000 members.
