Scope and Content

Modern copies of collections of arms in trick mostly relating to Northern gentry, contained in Bodl. MS Ashmole 834; made in 1912-16 by Miss E. G. Parker for William Henry (Harry) Rylands, FSA (d. 1922). Four volumes:- Vols. I, II. Coats of arms (752) from Ashmole 834, part IV, fols. 41-52v, 52v-64 (tricked by Robert Glover, Somerset Herald). See Surtees Society, 146 (1932), 101-94, and introduction xii-xiv; the arms in Ashmole 834 are said to be in no discernible order, to range widely topographically, but to relate mainly to northern gentry;- Vol. III. Coats of arms (337) of northern gentry from Ashmole 834, part IV, fols. 1-30v (tricked in alphabetical order by Robert Glover). Dates, 1575, 1578 given with the last two coats;- Vol. IV. Two collections:- (1) Arms of English monasteries, in trick, with accounts of their founders, from Ashmole 834, part IV, fols. 31-6. Annotated in the present copy with references to Tonge's Visitation, 1530. fols. 1-44;- (2) Miscellaneous coats of arms from Ashmole 834, part V, fols. 1-38v. Foliated in two sequences, fols. 1-21, 1-127.
