Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Bairds & Scottish Steel Ltd , pig iron and steel manufacturers, was formed in 1939 in Glasgow, Scotland, with a capital of £2,730,000 through the merger of the Lanarkshire interests of William Baird & Co Ltd , iron and coal masters, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, founded in 1830 and incorporated in 1938, and Scottish Iron & Steel Co Ltd , Glasgow, founded in 1912 . This merger was the brainchild of Andrew K McCosh, chairman of William Baird & Co Ltd, who saw the mutual benefit in linking up the Northern Steelworks of Scottish Iron & Steel Co Ltd with the Gartsherrie Ironworks of William Baird. Despite rationalisation the Scottish Iron & Steel Co Ltd retained its identity. The company was nationalised in 1967 as part of British Steel.
