Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The first organised football team in Caernarfon, Caernarfonshire, was the Carnarvon Athletic Club, founded in 1876. The present Caernarfon Town Football Club (Clwb Pel-Droed Tref Caernarfon) ('The Canaries') was founded in 1937. The club achieved success in the late 1940s, playing in the Welsh League (North) Division 1 from 1945 onwards. The club erected a new stand in 1952, purchased their Oval ground in 1958, and appointed their first team manager in 1959, but by 1961 had accumulated considerable debts. The team set new club goal-scoring records during the 1955-6 and 1956-7 seasons and reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup in 1958. Between 1981 and 1995 the team played in the Northern Premier League; in 1996 it joined the Welsh National League.
