Autograph letter, signed, from James L. Halliday to his wife Beryl. Cunard White Star, R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, Sunday [16th March 1947].
Ship 'fantastic - a floating hotel full of people I don't know'. Looked up Stirling and Boyd Orr. Breakfast after salt water bath. Ship pitched during night. Sat on glassed in deck, walked on upper deck and played games with fellow from Admiralty. Tremendous lunch menu. Tea with Indian businessman from next cabin. Saw Southampton disappear in sleat and snow last night, then explored vessel and had dinner.
Continued Monday: Went to cinema last night. Rough night but slept well; few at breakfast. Sunny but cold. Walked on deck with psychiatric social worker from London taking up job in States; knows Tavistock people. Talked to American publisher who is now looking at Halliday's manuscript. Ship vast. Talked to military engineer [Shepherd] about flour sensitivity; he suggests using ordinary flour sieved trough silk stocking. Posting ration book back to her. Bought sock suspenders from Austin Reeds shop here.
