Instrument of sasine by James Gifford (Giffard) of Sheriffhall [Midlothian] with the consent of William Gifford (Giffard), Janet Gifford (Jonete Giffard) his wife, and Helen Dishington (Dischingtoun), wife of the said James, in favour of Patrick Porteous (Portuous). Granting sasine of the lands of Lammerton Leys (Lamirtoun Leyis, Lammirtoun Leyis) and Standing Flat (Standand flatt) [Midlothian], of which Robert Porteous (Portuous) of Dalkeith [Midlothian] and Eupham Wauchope his wife had a charter, to Patrick Portuous. Boundary references to Newbattle, South Esk at Dalkeith, Easthouses (Easthous), and to lands occupied by Alexander Trent and William Allan (Allane): witnesses, Michael Marjoribanks (Majoribanks), scribe, Robert Colden, Patrick Porteous (Portuous), Alexander Young, Gilbert Thornton (Thorntoun), Archibald Preston (Prestoun), Robert Thorburn (Thornbrand), James Yule. Drawn and signed by Gilbert Thornton, notary. Sheriffhall, near Dalkeith, 27 December 1569.

The Porteous family are first mentioned in the Peebleshire area in the fifteenth century, making their home around Tweeddale and Annandale. They spread from there through the borders and Midlothian and eventually over the hills into neighbouring Lanarkshire, including Lamington.
