Scope and Content

This oral history collection comprises 50 interviews with people who had links to the Great Central Railway, the railways in and around Leicestershire, as well as people with origins and experience of railways outside the UK who have settled in Leicester. The interviewees were mainly conducted by John Swanwick and Bridget Masters between 2015 and 2018.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Great Central Railway was formed in 1897 and was closed as part of the Beeching report cuts in the 1960s, with the final section closing in 1969. It re-opened as a heritage railway in 1974 in Leicestershire. The Great Central Railway Oral History Project was set up in 2015, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It was part of a project to develop a new museum at Leicester North.
