The Company of Scottish Cheesemakers Ltd was incorporated in 1954 with registered offices at 190 West George Street, Glasgow, Scotland. The Company appears to have been formed following meetings of the Scottish Cheese Factors Association and the Scottish Association of Milk Products Manufacturers regarding the storage and grading of cheese. The company had no share capital as it was limited by guarantee. Membership was limited to 500 members who paid a subscription based on the tonnage of cheese they produced. The initial guarantors of the company included the Scottish Milk Marketing Board , United Creameries Ltd , East Kilbride Dairy Farmers Ltd , Scottish Wholesale Co-operative Society Ltd and Independent Dairies Ltd.
The company was managed by a management committee who initially met at the registered office but later meetings were hosted at the company offices of committee members. At first, the Company concerned itself with the grading and selling of cheese and sought to improve the marketing and quality of Scottish cheese through the co-ordination of advertising and the establishment of a certification scheme. It monitored the retail value of cheese products and commissioned marketing reports and books relating to cheese making in Scotland. It led marketing schemes for Scottish cheese, producing audio and visual advertisements and represented the Scottish cheese industry and exhibitions and trade shows. The company was wound up in 1995, being dissolved in 1996 .
