Papers on the Royal Commission on Local Government in England (Maud Commission), 1966-1969

Scope and Content

The collection of the Royal Commission on Local Government in England, which was chaired by Sir John Maud, the Rt. Hon. Lord Redcliffe-Maud and appointed on 7 June 1966, comprises all the papers that were circulated to the Commission members throughout the three years it was in being. They are all numbered and, where appropriate, in sequence. There are about five different type of document including background material, minutes of meetings, drafts of the Report, minutes of oral evidence etc. The contents have been checked and found to be incomplete, but the handlist gives an indication of a missing paper by an 'x' next to its entry.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Royal Commission on Local Government in England was chaired by Sir John Maud, the Rt. Hon. Lord Redcliffe-Maud and was appointed on 7 June 1966 with the following terms of reference: "...to consider the structure of Local Government in England, outside Greater London, in relation to its existing functions; and to make recommendations for authorities and boundaries, and for functions and their division, having regard to the size and character of areas in which these can be most effectively exercised and the need to sustain a viable system of local democracy; and to report.", London Gazette: no. 44014, pp. 6597–6598, 7 June 1966.
