Notebook containing detailed notes on the surgical treatment of injuries and diseases, kept by Griffith Llewelyn Carreg when he was a medical student at Queen's College, Birmingham. The Medical Faculty of Queen's College was transferred to Mason Science College, the University of Birmingham's predecessor, in 1892

Administrative / Biographical History

Griffith Llewelyn Carreg was born on 27 March 1842 at Ynyschaearn, Caernarvon,Wales. He was a student at Queen's College, Birmingham from 1859 when he passed the University of London matriculation examination. He was awarded a certificate in Chemistry and a medal in Materia Medica by Queen's College in 1860, when his address is given as the Isle of Man, and he passed Preliminary Science examinations at Queen's College in 1861. He passed his examination in the Science and Practice of Medicine and received a certificate to practice at Apothecaries Hall on 7 August 1862 and he was working as a surgeon at Queen's Hospital by 1863 when he is mentioned in a Birmingham Daily Post news report as the surgeon examining a defendant in a court case. He later seems to have moved to Liverpool as he is listed in medical directories of 1867, 1870, and 1871 as living in Everton Valley, Liverpool. He was made Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1864 and was given a Licence of the Society of Apothecaries the same year. The 1870 Medical Directory states that he was working as Assistant Surgeon, East Dispensary, Richmond Row in Liverpool. He died on 7 April 1874 at Birkenhead
